Moving is stressful as it is.

Here are 4 great tips for first time movers to be more prepared.

1. Room Measurements

Most listings for homes will include room measurements. Use these to make sure the furniture you have will fit where you want them to. If the information is not listed, ask your agent to get them for you. Don’t wait for moving day to find out your family heirloom won’t pass through the front door or fit in the room.

2. Moving Companies

Make sure to take to thoroughly vet moving companies before making a final decision. Make sure they are licensed, insured and have a good reputation. Look for recommendations. You can do so by checking the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the FMCSA’s lookup system.

Other things to look out for include: (a) will they cover damages to property (your furniture as well as the walls and floors of the new home); (b) will your items be stored or will they be delivered directly from the truck. Sometimes, companies will store your items to allow time for you to arrive at the new home. Again, the more you move your things, the more chances of damage; and (c) be sure to inventory all pieces along with them. It’s a tedious process but well worth the peace of mind.

Cost-saving tip: Ask for a discounted rate for moving mid-week and mid-month.

3. Transfer Utilities

Contact the utility service providers to let them know about your move. Do this at least a few weeks ahead. Schedule your disconnect and connect dates for electricity and gas. Also remember to contact your internet service provider, security system provider, and cable company as well.

4. Transfer Utilities

Sometimes, in all the chaos, people have been known to forget to update the US Postal Service (USPS) with their forwarding address. It’s easy to do online and free of cost. Visit: USPS Change of Address page for an easy step-by-step process. Otherwise you could end up missing out on important bills, letters and packages.

Make your first move a success!
